Tim Carty

Owner

Murphy Carty Insurance, Scituate Harbor, MA

Prior to running Murphy Carty Insurance agency, Tim Carty managed financial software projects – he enjoyed juggling personalities and skillsets to deliver a quality final product. He brings that same cooperative spirit to Murphy Carty Insurance, which was founded in 1947 and provides personal and commercial insurance products to Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Why have you stayed in the insurance industry? My world is fast-paced and people-oriented, and no two days are ever the same. These are key factors for me to stay highly motivated.

Why should people consider a career in insurance? Insurance requires many talents and has many career paths that can build upon each other, directly or indirectly.

What are common misconceptions about the industry/as a career that you don’t agree with? People expect immediate answers. Insurance is not usually a push-button proposition.

Where do you see the industry in 10-20 years? Accelerated industry consolidation. Continuing efforts to automate (with mixed results). Separate wind/weather coverage for nearly all households.

What is the most important leadership lesson you have learned, and how is it valuable to you today? Consensus and open communication work best. It makes positive results come more easily.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t in insurance? Maybe an attorney – a role that requires broad perspective and the ability to make decisions that matter.
