Agent Spotlight: David Keslar, Keslar Insurance Agency
David Keslar, Principal
Keslar Insurance Group: Newmarket, New Hampshire
David Keslar has been in the insurance industry for much of his career, and started his own independent agency, Keslar Insurance Agency, with his wife, Lisa, in 2015. He credits the rapid growth of his Newmarket, NH agency to his “spectacular staff, who work diligently to provide exceptional products and services” to their policyholders. Outside of the office, David Keslar is involved with the local Lions Club, where he helps fundraise for programs that help provide glasses to those in need and vision screening for school children, among other supports. He is also active in several local Chambers of Commerce that allow him to build a connection with his local business community.
What was your first job? My first job was landscaping for a neighbor in town for $2/hour when I was very young. That family kept me very busy cutting grass, chopping wood, and weeding. It certainly taught me the value of a dollar!
What would you do if you weren’t in insurance? I think if I weren’t an agent, I’d be an outdoor guide. I love being outside and exploring. I spend a lot of time outside of work enjoying the New Hampshire outdoors when I am not in the office. I love the mountains, lakes, and forests. I’d enjoy sharing my love for the outdoors with others, guiding them to the beauty and features that make New Hampshire so special.
Why should people consider a career in insurance? I find the work to be challenging and rewarding. I’m always learning, finding that no two days are the same. The industry is also evolving which keeps it from becoming boring! I also love that this industry is ideal for being an integral part of our community.
What excites you about insurance? I look forward to every day and the anticipation of what’s going to come our way. I love working on strategies that will allow all of us to continue to grow the agency, innovative new products, and accounts that challenge me to find the right fit for the customer’s needs. I also enjoy that there is always something new coming down the pike such as cyber liability coverages, electric cars, e-bikes, etc. All of these will require changes to policies and coverages to address these new risks.
What are your goals for your agency? We are always setting new goals for our agency. Our main goal is for continued growth. We are really proud of where we are now and want to make sure that we are letting more and more people know that we are a resource for all their insurance needs. We also strive to make sure we are supporting our team by providing them with quality positions complete with growth opportunities. Another big goal of ours is that we want to be known as an agency dedicated to giving back to our community. We strongly believe in supporting local – local businesses and our neighbors.
What is the most used tool or resource that has made you the most successful? We are a technology-focused agency. This means we incorporate a number of tools to both make doing business with us easier, and to provide better services to our clients. This includes robust sales and customer management, e-signature, online quoting, and texting apps among many other programs we use. We combine these technologies with our agents’ expertise to create a really great, unique experience with our agency.
What are common misconceptions about the industry that you don’t agree with? One myth we hear a lot is that insurance is boring. Daily, we find that this is so far from the truth. We are always learning and growing, and at our agency especially, we always try to have fun while doing it. Also, we hear that the industry is stagnant. We find, though, that there are always new needs, new products, and new technologies that allow agencies like ours to better serve customers’ needs. A common misconception in general is that people think independent agencies cost more for providing robust shopping experiences to find the right insurance product to fit their individual needs.
Where do you see the industry in 10-20 years? We see the insurance industry evolving in a number of ways. For instance, homes are going to be more sophisticated in design and technology, and more complex. Commercial insurance will have new coverages and risks as technology changes how companies do business. Electric cars will impact auto coverages. All of that said, that’s just the start. We believe that with all of these changes, a trusted agent will become even more important to assess the unique risks, and find the best fit for all of these new businesses being created each and every day.
Do you have a favorite book or podcast for fun, or career? I recently finished the book, “They Ask You Answer” by Marcus Sheridan. It has an interesting twist on how to stop thinking from a selling perspective and starting thinking about answering questions to build your position as a though leader.
